Kolkata Knight Riders Captain to be announced in South Africa

Kolkata Knight Riders said they will announce the skipper and the squad for the IPL in south Africa.

Director of Cricket Operation KKR, John Buchanan decided not to disclose the name of the captain in India. After a six-day training camp at the Eden Gardens here, Buchanan said we want to keep all options open before we start off the IPL Season 2.

The team association is confused over the number of players the Knight Riders will be taking to South Africa. Buchanan told media that it would be a 24-member squad, KKR Chief executive officer Joy Bhattacharya said the whole squad of 29.

“I don’t want to disclose the names of the players who would be going to South Africa now as we want to keep all options open.

“We might take the whole squad which took part in the conditioning camp to South Africa. Nothing has been finalaised right now. The final team for KKR would be announced in South Africa,” said Bhattacharya.

The players will leave in batches for South Africa, with first lot flying out to Bloemfontein, the base camp of Kolkata Knight Riders, on Tuesday. On the other hand, Ganguly will be leaving on April 5.

Meanwhile the Knight Riders big three, Shahrukh Khan, Ganguly and Buchanan will meet in Mumbai to unveil the new jersey of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the teams main agenda of captaincy would be discussed.

Change in dates is a Relief - Vettori

New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori welcomes the Indian Premier League’s relocation to South Africa although he is disappointed the tournament had to shift due to security fears.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India today confirmed the 59-match Twenty20 competition will be held in South Africa between April 18 and May 24.

South Africa and England were vying for the hosting rights after India was ruled out because the safety of the players could not be guaranteed as the competition coincides with local elections.

“It’s disappointing it’s not in India,” Vettori said, echoing the comments of vice-captain Brendon McCullum this week.

“The guys love going over there and touring.”

Vettori was relieved the playing schedule had been put back a week instead of the original start date of April 10 because he, McCullum, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Kyle Mills would have had little recovery time after the current series against India ends in Wellington on April 7.

Kolkata Knight Riders to have multiple captains in IPL 2009

The Kolkata Knight Riders have decided not to have a fixed captain for IPL 2009. John Buchanan, the coach, told a press conference that the decision was “not a slight” to Sourav Ganguly but a plan for the future. He said there could be four or five captains through the tournament. Is this a case of another Australian coach having problems with Ganguly, the captain.

A grim-looking Ganguly, sitting beside Buchanan, refused to elaborate on the decision. When asked if he was upset by it, Ganguly did not answer directly and Buchanan interjected: “Of course he will be upset. He is the Prince of Kolkata.” Ganguly laughed and put his hands up and said “I am not upset”.

Ganguly said the plan was Buchanan’s. “He is the coach of the team and he has got to right to make decisions. We’ll see as it goes along. At the end of the day we all have to deliver.”

Buchanan said he was keen to change the whole approach to captaincy and leadership in cricket. “I really think in the course of this 20-over tournament we have the capacity to have the team coach, Matthew Mott, running the batting side of things. If we have to change the batting order or change personnel to fit a certain situation, then that is something that could fall under his control. “Once on the field, we have some very good leaders there in Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge and Sourav Ganguly. The laws of the game state that you need a captain for certain formal roles, such as the coin toss, but that aside, I see there is scope to challenge the way teams have been run in the past.
